Nipah Virus Outbreak in India: What You Need to Know
In Kerala, India, there has been an increase in cases of the fatal Nipah virus. The virus has infected five people, two of whom have passed away. Since it first appeared in the southern Indian state of Kerala in late August, the bat-borne Nipah virus has affected six people there. approximately the previous week, approximately 700 people, including healthcare professionals, have undergone infection tests. Some public transportation systems, offices, and schools have been shut down by the state.
Transmission and Symptoms:
A rare but dangerous bat-borne virus called the Nipah virus can give humans fever, vomiting, and respiratory illnesses. Seizures and encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, can occur in severe cases, putting a person in a coma. The virus has a 40–75% mortality rate. It is spread from animals to people and can also spread through tainted food or directly between individuals.
Outbreak History:
In 1998, the virus spread among pig breeders in Malaysia and Singapore, resulting in the first Nipah outbreak. Since then, India and Bangladesh have seen the most cases of the illness. These outbreaks can be fatal even though they typically only affect a small area geographically. Some experts are concerned that more viral proliferation among people may make the virus more contagious.
Prevention and Control Measures:
India is acting quickly to stop the spread of this deadly but rare virus, which affects bats and humans. Dr. Rontgene Solante, a specialist in infectious diseases, predicts that the Nipah virus will not be as intense or spread as quickly as COVID-19. An official in India claims that the outbreak looks to be under control despite the fact that more than 1,200 people have been added to a list of close contacts.
The World Health Organization's fact sheet on Nipah virus infection can be used to learn more about the disease.
