The results were catastrophic as landslides were set off and cars were washed away on the perimeter of the city, killing at least two people. Authorities raised the warning level to red to indicate that there was an immediate need for action due to the seriousness of the situation. Popular tourist destinations, including the venerable Forbidden City, were forced to close because to the relentless heavy rain that started over the weekend. The full impact of the calamity, however, has primarily been seen in the areas surrounding Beijing, where heavy rains flooded riverbeds that had been dry for the majority of the year.
